![]() ![]() Feser has written a lively and well informed polemic against the latest crop of Village Atheists – Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, & Co. ![]() ![]() “ A thoughtful and theologically sophisticated sally into the ranks of the New Atheism. With energy and humor as well as transparent exposition, Feser reestablishes the unassailable superiority of classical philosophy. Ignoramuses like the four horsemen of the apostasy, whose factual errors, half-truths, and mischaracterization Feser highlights with contemptuous glee, “refute” Aristotle only by changing the playing field from metaphysics to science, from philosophical realism to materialism. Aristotle’s proof that there is a prime mover or pure being-God-remains solid. Feser chooses to argue from Aristotle because he was not arguing from any religious perspective and because Aristotle’s logic, his rationality, hasn’t been improved upon or refuted by modern philosophy. “Their books stand out for their manifest ignorance” of the Western religious tradition, he says, “and for the breathtaking shallowness of their philosophical analysis of religious matters.” Far better than such no-quarters rhetoric, however, are the review of pre-Aristotelian philosophy and the summary of Aristotelian metaphysics and Thomas Aquinas’ refinements of Aristotle that make up the heart, soul, and bulk of the book. *Starred Review* New Atheists Richards Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, Daniel Dennett, and Sam Harris get their comeuppance from philosopher Feser in the spirit with which they abuse believers. ![]() ![]() It gave me a whole new perspective on the settings and historical background of the book. ![]() My drive from Germany to Turkey during the writing of THERE WILL BE WOLVES, following as closely as possible the route the crusaders took, was the highlight of my research. SHADOWS ON A SWORD (HarperCollins Canada Ltd., 1996) continues the history with the account of the First Crusade, and the soon to be published LIONHEART'S SCRIBE (HarperCollins Canada Ltd., 1999) completes the trilogy with the story of Richard Lionheart and the Third Crusade. What began as one book eventually became three. I had read about the crusades in history classes when I was young, but as I began to do my research, I discovered another whole side to the story. ![]() One of my favorite cities to explore was Cologne, the city where it all started on Easter weekend in 1096. I first heard the story of the People's Crusade when I lived in Germany. ![]() ![]() ![]() Kohli returned the favour in the Lucknow edition of the rivalry before engaging in a heated spat with Naveen-ul-Haq and then Gambhir. In the first meeting, Gambhir had broken into a crazy celebration and then shushed the Chinnaswamy crowd after the win. And surely none of it pertains to cricket. ![]() The two matches between RCB and LSG, one in April and the other on May 1, probably remain the most-talked-about IPL 2023 games. LSG later took a cheeky dig at Kohli with a Gill reference. Like his "idol", he smashed a second-straight ton as well as Gujarat Titans beat RCB by six wickets in the final league game of the season and denied a fan-favourite rematch between Bangalore and Lucknow Super Giants in the Eliminator. And the player, to cut short his hopes in IPL 2023 was the one believed to be his heir-apparent, Shubman Gill. A back-to-back century in a space of just four days left RCB hopes high and bright of a fourth successive playoffs qualification. Virat Kohli was giving glimpses of his 2016 form. The stars were shining brightly for Royal Challengers Bangalore. ![]() ![]() Unlearning God: How Unbelieving Helped Me Believe (2018).Living the Quaker Way: Discover the Hidden Happiness in the Simple Life (2013).The Evolution of Faith: How God Is Creating a Better Christianity (2011).If the Church Were Christian: Rediscovering the Values of Jesus (2010).I Love You, Miss Huddleston: and Other Inappropriate Longings of My Indiana Childhood (2009).If God Is Love: Rediscovering Grace in an Ungracious World (2004).If Grace Is True: Why God Will Save Every Person (2003). ![]() For Everything a Season: Simple Musings on Living Well (1999).The Christmas Scrapbook: A Harmony Story (2005). ![]() Porch Talk: Stories of Decency, Common Sense, and Other Endangered Species (2007).Hometown Tales: Recollections of Kindness, Peace, and Joy (1998). ![]() ![]() At least, in theory (yes – I know that is never going to happen now, and I am still very upset for having gotten so behind in this series in the first place). I really enjoyed seeing all of those changes, and now have a better understanding of how this series could comfortably continue for as long as it wanted to. While there are still those strong elements the series is used to (read: the past and Gwen’s twisted ex-husband), there are also several new elements as well. They have been through hell and back, and they will almost certainly run that circuit again. Yet Gwen, and her children, are survivors. ![]() There’s a lot of commentary to be found there. The whole of the series has never been afraid to show the darker side of humanity, or the desperation we sometimes feel to punish those we feel have wronged the world. If you haven’t read the rest of the series yet, you should probably go do that first. This is the second novel in which Gwen found herself at the center of a mystery that did not revolve around her ex (for a change), yet it was still very dark. Bitter Falls was another chilling and haunting addition to this series. ![]() ![]() ![]() The Bible says the Word of God can change things that you cannot change on your own. How do you need your life changed today? What part of your life do you feel powerless to change? As you know God’s Word better, God changes your life for the better. It produces in you a character more like Jesus and a heart for the things God loves. Once the Bible takes root in your heart, it begins to sprout, grow, and bear fruit. How does that happen? The Bible is often compared to a seed. The Bible calls it being “born again.” James 1:18 says, “He chose to give us birth through the word of truth” (NIV). When you feel like you’re at the end of your rope, God uses the Bible to give you a fresh start, a do-over. ![]() Through the Bible, God recreates our lives. God wants to give you all of these things-and all of this starts with his Word. ![]() Without the Bible, you wouldn’t know God. You wouldn’t know about God’s purpose for your life. ![]() You wouldn’t know about Jesus’ death on the cross. What kinds of things does the Bible do for you? Without God’s Word, you could never be saved. It can make the impossible become reality in your life, because it has supernatural power. But it’s not just any fresh start-it’s a total transformation! He wants to transform your life so that you can become the person he created you to be and live a fulfilling life. God uses his Word to give you a fresh start in life. “He chose to give us birth through the word of truth.” James 1:18 (NIV) The Bible Does the Impossible in Your Life ![]() ![]() ![]() Not that we need a reason to support these authors, but Native American Heritage Month in November is a great time to recommit to diversifying our bookshelves. In the United States, Native American is the most common term (and as such, is the one we use here), but many Native people prefer the terms American Indian or Indigenous American. While many refer to Native people as Native American, the National Museum of the American Indian notes that it's best to use the individual tribal name, when possible. Even the appropriate terminology can differ depending on the individual experience. ![]() Just like every cultural perspective, the Native American experience isn't a monolith and neither is literature written by Native and Indigenous authors. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Joel, sensing he's at a crossroads, heads for New York to visit his childhood friend K (Kadeem Hardison of "A Different World"). He has an advantage, since he not only directed but also wrote the script and stars as Joel, a divinity student from a quiet North Carolina town who experiences some last-minute doubts about his calling. There are some familiar conventions, but Bond brings to "Def" depth and emotional detail generally absent from such films. A few years ago, Kathryn Bigelow brought new blood to the vampire thriller with "Near Dark," and James Bond III has done the same with "Def by Temptation," a contemporary black horror film that's light-years ahead of "Blacula" and "Scream, Blacula, Scream!," which established this genre offshoot in the very early '70s. Genre films are often the last refuge of the hack director, but once in a while they can be the spawning ground for a major new talent. ![]() ![]() ![]()
