There are many absorbing moments in this very thoughtful and compassionate film. He is a well-loved guy nearing retirement at one stage, however, he confesses to feeling despair, back in his 40s, about whether teaching was meaningful for him. They start their relationship in Pucked, but we as readers don’t know much about it, besides that it makes Alex mad (hypocrite much Alex?). In Pucked, we get introduced to Miller “Buck” Butterson, who is Violet’s step brother and then we meet Sunny, who is Alex’s sister. This is the second standalone in the Pucked series. Miller learns-eventually-that if he wants to make Sunshine “Sunny” Waters fall for him, he's going to have to do a whole lot more than show her his stick skills in the bedroom. Beyond that minor detail, Miller doesn’t know the first thing about relationships or the time and effort they require. Except, unlike team captain and all-around nice guy Alex Waters-who happens to date his stepsister, Miller’s media reputation as a manwhore is well earned. Miller thinks he’s found that woman in his teammate’s sister. A real, non-bunny girlfriend to take on dates, and not jump into bed with after five seconds of conversation. After five years in the NHL, deflecting goals on the ice and scoring them with puck bunnies, Miller has decided he’s ready for a girlfriend. In the 1964 film version, it is hinted that Eliza and Higgins end up together after he realises how important she was in his life. Whilst Higgins eventually takes up the challenge, and indeed, he does teach Eliza to speak like a lady, he retains his snobbery and barely hidden disdain for her, treating her unkindly enough that she claims that it was in fact Pickering's gentlemanly example that taught her to be a lady. After Eliza overhears Higgins tell his friend Colonel Pickering that he could pass her off as a duchess by teaching her to speak 'properly', she shows up at his house, offering to pay for lessons.
